Sangria
Sangria originated in Spain where it was enjoyed to cool down after flamenco dancing and to cool down hot summer nights. The traditional recipe is a combination of red wine, traditionally Rioja, Merlot, Zinfandel, or Syrah , lemon or orange juice with their slices, brandy, sugar and soda water and of course served chilled.
The name Sangria comes from the Spanish translation for “bleeding”. This is because most sangria is made with red wine and is a deep ruby red color. The drink is a great solution for low quality red wine. By mixing it with other ingredients, its shortcomings can be masked. But remember some wines are so bad that not even Sangria can save them. So don’t use the absolute worse red wine you can find. The recipe for sangria is not as strict as a recipe for a Martini. You can hardly go wrong when making Sangria. With this drink, that is why everyone has their own variations for it.
