Wines by Country: South Africa
Located at the southern tip of Africa is one of the oldest “New World” wine regions, with a history of vine growing that dates back to the middle of the 17th Century. But it wasn’t until the 19th Century that the wines were recognized or even became popular outside of South Africa.
The grapes cultivated in Cape Town include the usual suspects, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Cinsault. In addition, the unique South African hybrid, Pinotage, a cross between Cinsault and Pinot Noir, is also grown. Their white grapes include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Riesling.
